Making Some Cool Sheet Metal Art
Making Some Cool Sheet Metal Art
By Jack Landry
Metal makes our world more accessible and more advanced. It is so important because there are so many uses for it.
It can be big and very heavy, such as with beams of steel. These beams can be transported to many places around the world so that buildings and skyscrapers can be built safely.
It can also be very small, in the case of sheet metal. These sheets can be razor thin and can be bent and moved into many different kinds of shapes.
Machines such as plate rollers mash pieces together so that they are thinner. This is how sheets are made.
There are many different ways that these sheets can be used, but I bet you don't know one of the more unusual uses that they have. They can be used for art!
Yes, that's right: sheet metal art. You might be wondering how you could possible make art out of a piece of metal, but it's easier and more enjoyable than you think!
Many people love to use sheet metal as a medium for artistic creations because it is so bendable and shapeable; and because it is so thin and light, it is easy to transport.
So now that you're a little bit more interested in the subject, we need to talk about how exactly you make art using this material. It is not as hard as you think.
The first thing that you need to do to get started is to acquire some pieces of sheet. These can easily be found in a lot of places.
You can find pieces at home improvement stores, salvage yards, or junkyards. You can either acquire flat pieces or cylindrical pieces, which can easily be cut and molded into flat pieces.
Next, you need to decide what exactly you want to make with your newfound medium! This is probably the easiest part of the whole process.
That is because your imagination is the only limit that you have. Anything that can be sketched onto the surface of the sheet metal can be made into an artistic creation.
Take a thick marker and sketch whatever you want on the piece. You don't have to worry about the lines of the marker because you will paint over those lines anyway.
Once you have sketched the outline of your creation, it is now time to cut it out! You will need a pair of scissors to do this.
It might be wise to get an extra strength pair of scissors, as you will be working with metal. It will make it much easier for you.
Once you have the scissors, start cutting out the design. The cutting might be hard to get used to at first, but you will get the hang of it after a while.
If your scissors tend to get stuck, there are ways that you can bend the metal so as to make it easier for the scissors to cut through. Just bend the piece in different ways until it is easier to cut again.
Once you have cut the outline out, you can now shape it to whatever you want it to be; that is unless you want it to be completely flat. In that case, you can move on to the next step.
If you do want it to have shapes, you will need a pair of pliers. Use the pliers to carefully bend the desired areas into different shapes.
You could bend it, twist it, or do just about whatever you want to it. Only your imagination is the limit!
Once you have bent it into shape, you can then proceed to paint it. There are several types of ways that you can apply the paint that will be easy for you.
You can use spray paint, which can be easily sprayed on in as many coats as you want. You could also use a sponge brush which can look really cool.
Just remember to use waterproof or weatherproof paint if you decide to display your creation outdoors. Otherwise, a quick storm or rain shower could ruin what you spend so much time on.
