Guitar Tips for Beginners

By Erami Bulayulama

Learning to play the guitar is the dream of many people. While some people have gone on to make names for themselves others are just starting out. If you have recently purchased your first guitar, you are in for an exciting opportunity of learning how to make beautiful music. Just remember, the guitar is not a magical instrument that will just start playing. To become a good or even great guitar player, you will need to dedicate time and effort but the rewards are tremendous.

One of the first things you will need to do is decide if you will hire someone to teach you to play or buy books and teach yourself. Then, you might consider taking advantage of the pictures and videos found on the Internet. Many of these are excellent and easy to follow. Then, you will need to decide on the type of music you want to play. Remember, you will have a number of genres to choose from, all very exciting but unique.

In addition to learning the proper way to hold the guitar, you will also learn the proper placement of the fingers and soon be learning a number of chords. Even before you know much, take time to start plucking one string at a time to hear its sound. Each string and each note is designated with a letter of the alphabet from A to G. In addition, as you learn chords and notes, you will see a "#", which denotes a sharp note or a "b", which refers to a flat note. For example, if you saw "C#", that would mean C Sharp or "Cb" would mean C flat.

Before you can play any chords, you'll need to tune your guitar. There are six strings, with a note assigned to each one. An example would be tuning your guitar so that the first and thinnest string is the high E. The second is B, the third G, the fourth D, the fifth A, and the sixth, thickest string will be the low E.

To tune your guitar, you can take it to your local music shop or have your guitar teacher tune it for you. Soon, you will know exactly how to tune your own guitar. Once you have your guitar ready to go, chances are you will be taught the first position and open chords. What you will find is that over the next few weeks, you will become more and more comfortable with the feel of the guitar and within about a month, be playing actual songs. Playing the guitar is a wonderful hobby that with practice, could easily turn into something more.
