One of the inevitable actions one will take as an employee is salary negotiation. To be honest, if you want to have a successful negotiation, it is best that you learn the basics of what to do and what not to do. There are a lot of people who fear the fact that they have to ask for more salary for the mere fact that it is just scary to do so. The fact is that if you believe that you deserve a better salary, then you should just go ahead and ask for it.

First off you need to know what is the actual salary cap for your position and experience for your area. This will give you an idea on what you should be getting. Never compare what you are getting from your friends or other employees' salaries because that isn't going to help you. Get the rate you know is proper for your job and you are sure you are deserving of.

Do be prepared with all your documents showing your accomplishments and experiences which will show the company that you are are deserving of the amount that you ask for. Don't be unprepared because going into negotiations for your salary without anything to back you up will just bring you down.

Do talk about why you are deserving of that salary, as well as what you will be offering the company to be earning that amount. As long as you can justify what you ask for with your hard work, then you shouldn't have any problems getting it. Don't discuss the amount of money you need because your expenses are none of their concern and certainly won't help you in getting that salary you want.

Do reach a compromise, since it is a negotiation it is expected that you won't exactly receive the amount you ask for. To go around this, you could add a buffer to the rate you really want to receive so you can still end up with that same amount. Don't reject the job offer right away just because you don't get exactly what you want. You need to be willing to be flexible because if the job is a good one, you shouldn't just throw it away.

Just be sure that you are deserving of what you ask for and you can prove to the company that you have earned it. With hard work and experience, you can definitely get that pay you desire.
