What Will Be The Affect Of Programmable Cells On Our Future

With technology at its epic, nearly everyone has access to valuable gadgets at affordable prices. Facing lack of funds, you can even get hold of a used laptop or refurbished laptop in the ideal condition. By using a similar idea scientists and engineers got together to make the computers of the next generation which will be cheaper in cost but great in value in medicine. No one could have thought that we will live to see a time when small computers could be structured out of living cells. As yet, we have observed different devices that can be programmed, but the notion of programming a tiny surviving cell is simply great. The purpose is to employ living cells to find out hazards, get involved in the repair of tissues throughout a living body. It might further be a revelation that the scientists are willing to program millions or maybe billions of cells that will work in unison. The scientists trained the bacteria to give off a green fluorescent light as a responding signal to the one emitted by another group of cells. Interestingly, the signal was triggered by a chemical.

The amazing bit is that it was not just the genetic programming modes that brought about this change, but even the manner those cells were made to behave like digital circuits. Just think the idea of cells doing basic mathematical logic to generate real readouts that one can conveniently associate with silicon chips. Now cells have the ability to send instructions and at the same time other cells can even answer to those messages. The idea is to create patterns such as the well known bull's eye effect which will cause the cells to secrete materials. These secreted substances will act as objects of great scientific utility. Think of them as mini antennas or transmitters sending off signals from regions humans cannot possibly reach.

Moreover, programmed cells can further be employed for construction and mending of tissues within the body. They can instruct the body's natural defenses to the site where repair is needed. The process known as programmed tissue engineering is specifically of high advantage for the growth and mending of nerve and bone cells.

Through the computer patterns it is possible to view the whole behavior of the engineered cells and make a study of the behavior of the organism with slight modifications. Until now, the conclusions from experiments have coincided to a great extent with the computer models. But a real victory is when we can obtain the exact mathematical description of the working of every component of cell. This great contribution to synthetic biology does not end on this spot. In future it will be easy to select a specific behavior from cells. This will be performed by a computer program which will create a genetic circuit. This will open up doors to extensive research in the application to tiny computers in medicine.
