How The Model Of Metro Ethernet Hooks Up To The Internet

By Terrence Thomas.

There are quite a few households that have networks set up so that a single printer can be shared among several users, or perhaps a security camera setup can be monitored from different places in the home. These networks could be wireless accessed through a router or they may be hard wired with Ethernet cable. The Metro Ethernet concept is one that covers a metropolitan area of customers to a wider network or to the Internet, using the Ethernet standard.

Ethernet is a way to connect in a network, using a cable to join computer to computer, or computer to device or just computer to modem for Internet access. Since most computers are built ready to network, there is little to understand in setting up except which wire to purchase or router to set up. The term Ethernet implies a wired connection, but a wireless system is referred to as Wi-Fi.

It was created about thirty years ago and has been described as an evolving technology and as other requirements of business have surfaced, this technology has adapted alongside and so, reliability has been proved as well. In talking about the advantages of this protocol, bandwidth might be mentioned first. Bandwidth refers to the channel capacity and the larger the capacity the faster the transmission speeds. Great demand for close to instantaneous information would necessitate very fast speeds, so the availability would excite the business tech and business community as it becomes reality.

A Local Area Network is most times tied to a particular area, such as a building or a campus. As the name implies, the local area network is restricted but may be intricate in nature, with of hundreds of computers and users. Local area networks are everywhere because Ethernet is relatively inexpensive and the standards are so widely accepted. A wide area network, or WAN, is a group of LANs that are connected, but are not limited to one area locally.

Metro area networks are a new way of using Ethernet. These fall in between the LANs and WANs as communication and data transmitters. Several features of the MAN are connecting remote offices so that everyone has access to same information with the same bandwidth, using application service providers and remote storage sites to rapidly upload and download files, and applying access to websites so customers can do business quickly and easily.

The connections are made through a star configuration, where the central figure is the hub. This hub can store and transmit the data throughout the system with routers or fiber optic cabling. This type of set-up allows for easy troubleshooting in case of outages.

Because the procedures and technology have been used in Internet connectivity for almost thirty years, and have developed throughout that time period, it would be considered reliable. The problems have been worked through and adapted for continued success. The new technologies are built on these in faster and less expensive ways to create an almost universal platform for more and better things in the future.

The Metro Ethernet and MAN has been studied and prepared for in the provider labs and research. This system could be promising as the next generation of networks with possible benefits for many consumers.
