How The Practice Of Metro Ethernet Links To Networking
How The Practice Of Metro Ethernet Links To Networking
By Terrence Thomas.
There are quite a few households that have networks set up so that a single printer can be shared among several users, or perhaps a security camera setup can be monitored from different places in the home. These networks could be wireless accessed through a router or they may be hard wired with Ethernet cable. The Metro Ethernet concept is one that covers a metropolitan area of customers to a wider network or to the Internet, using the Ethernet standard.
A definition of Ethernet is that it is the way to link computers in a local area network, or LAN, using a wired connection. There are quite a few technical specifics, such as twisted pair and RJ-45, but those aspects have been simplified for the end user who only must plug in the cord to access the network. This Local Area Network is fairly limited in geographical scope, such as a college campus or building, but may have several hundred computers or devices hooked in. These devices need room to send and receive, and that is another advantage to this type of protocol.
It was created about thirty years ago and has been described as an evolving technology and as other requirements of business have surfaced, this technology has adapted alongside and so, reliability has been proved as well. In talking about the advantages of this protocol, bandwidth might be mentioned first. Bandwidth refers to the channel capacity and the larger the capacity the faster the transmission speeds. Great demand for close to instantaneous information would necessitate very fast speeds, so the availability would excite the business tech and business community as it becomes reality.
A Local Area Network is most times tied to a particular area, such as a building or a campus. As the name implies, the local area network is restricted but may be intricate in nature, with of hundreds of computers and users. Local area networks are everywhere because Ethernet is relatively inexpensive and the standards are so widely accepted. A wide area network, or WAN, is a group of LANs that are connected, but are not limited to one area locally.
These can also be open to Internet access for user interface in bringing more versatility. The design may be better for online and remote IT functions and database storage off-site to increase both security and functionality, as an alternative to housing servers and equipment in a central location.
Metro Area Networks, referred to as MAN, really falls between the other two types. Not restricted locally nor does the network disconnect one from the other. A type that may be wired together to form a closed network to benefit a single company and its supply partners, or more open as a cooperative. The benefits of scalability will deliver the exact requirements for the network, without being inefficient in too much or too little.
Because the procedures and technology have been used in Internet connectivity for almost thirty years, and have developed throughout that time period, it would be considered reliable. The problems have been worked through and adapted for continued success. The new technologies are built on these in faster and less expensive ways to create an almost universal platform for more and better things in the future.
The Metro Ethernet system could be a promising solution to the increasing demand for reliable and fast Internet solutions. While building on existing technology and taking advantage of current infrastructure, the modifications and costs to implement could be very efficiently done, to good effect for all users.
