Repairing Your Own Ethernet Cord

Repairing Your Own Ethernet Cord

By Jim Witt

Many people in our society cannot function without daily use of the internet. Consequently the demand for internet services is extremely high. There are many parts that are used when connecting to the internet and an Ethernet cord is the key to making it all happen.

An Ethernet cord is essential for connecting your computers to the internet. Even wireless internet requires an Ethernet cord for the main connection. It is the stem that connects the whole network to the internet.

Ethernet cords usually have a bright blue encasing to make them easy to identify. They also have cables on each of its ends which are made to fit into the Ethernet Ports. These connecting ends are known as RJ-45 cable connectors.

The cable end RJ-45 is a specific size meant just for computer networks. RJ-45 is a shortened version of Registered Jack 45. Only this jack size will be able to fit into the Ethernet Port. Make sure you aren't trying to fit another size into it or the Ethernet Port can be damaged.

If the Ethernet chord breaks in any way, it can usually be fixed pretty easily. The first thing you want to do is get rid of the broken part of the chord. If the cable ends are broken, throw them away and get new ones. If part of the chord is damaged, cut off the bad part but save your cable end.

Your next step in fixing the cord will be to strip all the open ends. This means the blue casing will need to be removed so that the wires underneath are exposed. With these wires you will place them in this specific order: green-white, green, orange-white, blue, blue-white, orange, brown-white, and lastly brown.

Now that the wires are in order, you will want to neatly plug them into their appropriate spots on the jack end. Do it carefully so that you don't damage the wires. Once correctly placed, clamp the cord so that the wires don't come loose.

Repairing an Ethernet cord may take some time the first time but is a great skill to learn. It saves you money and also helps our environment by reusing what many people just throw away. Almost anyone can repair an Ethernet cord if they simply put their minds to it.
