A number of years ago in Britain one of the pastimes enjoyed by many people in the UK was to go to the picture house to see well-known actors such as Laurel and Hardy. Over the years the cinema experience improved as the movies included speech and were in color. Gradually after the rise of the number of TVs the cinemas found it hard to remain popular as the population preferred to stay at home and watch a movie in the luxury of their own home. There were eventually unfilled local cinemas all over the UK and many of them had to close down.

In the late 1920's a new craze had started to take over America in the form of a game called Beno. This game begun to become all the rage and was re-named Bingo by a New York salesman. In the middle of the 1960's bingo crossed the Atlantic after a modification in the law in Britain. All the empty local cinemas started to see new life this time not as picture houses but as bingo halls. The change in the law permitted bingo games to be accessible to members only clubs so thousands of people started to join their neighborhood bingo club.

For many years in the UK people have enjoyed an evening at the bingo and it is not unknown for 3 generations of a household to go together. Bingo is seen as an enjoyable night out with the chance to win a small sum of cash. Over the years the prizes have grown and it is now achievable to win up to a million pounds in a particular nationwide game.

The popularity of bingo has taken a knock due to a modification in the law regarding smoking. After the change in the law in Scotland smoking was banned in all public and members venues. This prohibition was also followed in England and Wales just over a year later. Having a cigarette whilst enjoying bingo was what loads of of the older bingo players had become used to over the years.

Due to the smoking ban attendances at the bingo have decreased. In contrast due to the arrival of the inter net the number of web sites offering on line bingo has grown. Competition on these sites for people is massive and some even offer free bingo and the opportunity to win real cash. Wherever you play bingo make sure you do it sensibly.
