How To Nail That All Important Interview

How To Nail That All Important Interview

By Ingrid Taylor

Boy have you been working hard to find a new job! Your resume is spiffed up, you've been on the job boards. After weeks or even months of waiting you finally get a call - you are asked to come for an interview!

If you follow these steps below, you will have a successful interview and a better chance at getting that dream job!

First, do your research. Find out as much info on the company you are interviewing at, and the person who will be interviewing you, that you can. Do this online.

Companies like to see that you have studied up on their accomplishments, and that you know about current topics in the field. You also will want to make sure you know how to get to the interview, and that you have an idea of how long it will take so you won't be late!

You should always dress professionally for an interview. Watch that your hair, nails, and teeth are clean and groomed. If you aren't sure what to wear, be overdressed rather than underdressed.

It's not just clothes that make an impression. Your bearing and demeanor do too. Employers watch your emotional state. Take a nice deep breath, smile, and keep calm.

You want to highlight your strengths. It isn't enough to just say "I have the following strengths." You will want to use specific examples. Ideally you will be able to talk about different projects you have worked on or leadership roles you've held with other employers.

Don't talk about negative things though. This is not the time to complain about previous employers, go on about what you didn't like about past jobs, or ask about overtime or pay.

Don't lie and say you have skills that you don't. But if you are asked about a skill you don't have, you can point out similar skills you have, or express your ability to learn new skills quickly.

Be ready for the interview, and have an idea of what you are going to say in response to questions. You also need to be ready to ask questions about both the company and the position. This will help convey your enthusiasm to employers.
