Sinusitis Vision And Other Complications

Sinusitis Vision And Other Complications

By Joseph T Martinez

Are you worried that your sinusitis can lead to other problems? It's true and sinusitis vision as well as other complications can result from it. However, you shouldn't panic just yet. Here is some more information that should help you figure out these complications. With a little more understanding, you should be able to cope and deal with these situations appropriately.

Sinusitis Vision

One of the more popular questions asked around about any sinus infection or inflammation is what effect they have on the eyes. The simple truth is there is a connection, however, most of the time the symptoms are very minor. The common things associated with the flare ups like watery eyes and blurry vision are usually the result of the drainage issues from the nose. The sinus problem can cause drainage issues with your nose that can eventually block the drainage of tears from the eyes, causing the blurry and watery vision.

Complications

The formal name of vision complications would be orbital complications. According to Dr. Jay Dutton from the American Rhinologic Society, these orbital and other complications are rare. If you treat the sinus problem properly, you shouldn't have to worry about these. However, since the sinuses are close to some of the other organs in the head, including the brain, you might still want to know more about these.

Orbital

Let's start with the eyes. There are four pairs of sinuses all around our skull: the maxillary, the frontal, the ethmoid, and the sphenoid. The first three are all very close to the eyes. If the infection from any of these spreads to the eye, inflammation of the eyelid, abscesses and even blindness can occur.

Intracranial

The frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid cavities are all close to the brain. There is a layer of bone in between them but if the infection manages to get past this bone, it can get to the fluid and tissue that lines the brain, resulting in meningitis. The infections are known to spread to the brain itself causing severe problems like comas, seizures, and even death!

Osteomyelitis

According to Dr Dutton, the bones surrounding the sinuses can also be inflamed in a condition known as osteomyelitis. This can cause severe problems in the bones and the organs that are near the bones: the eyes and the brain as well as other organs.

What to Do!?

Again, don't panic! These are very rare. Also, if you can get to your sinus condition properly, you shouldn't have to worry too much about these complications. The trick with your sinuses is to know what is causing your problem. According to the Mayo Clinic, allergies and infections are usually behind the problem. They also suggest that antibiotics may not be the only course of action needed. In fact, the Mayo Clinic states that antibiotics may not be necessary in both acute and chronic cases. The anti-bacterial drugs can be used to treat bacterial infections but usually these conditions are caused by things other than a bacterial infection.

The Mayo Clinic suggests nasal sprays or anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve some of the symptoms. They also make life-practice suggestions like drinking plenty of water, exercising right, sleeping right, and eating right. Also, the Mayo Clinic endorses the use of Neti Pots and sinus irrigation techniques as well as Steam Inhalation. Humidifiers can also help as prevention techniques. As allergies are a common cause, try to manage your exposure to your allergens as well.
