Spanish is the second most common language now in the United States, and the third most common in the world. It is a very important language to learn for many reasons, and as such, many people travel to South America to learn Spanish. One of the most popular countries in Argentina, and although they speak a slightly different Spanish, the rules are generally the same. While living abroad, there are many things you can do to maximize the amount of Spanish you learn. Here are five of the BEST ways to improve your Spanish while living in Argentina, or any other Spanish speaking country.
1. Live with people who only speak Spanish: Doing so will force you to converse in Spanish, and you will improve your comprehension much faster this way.
2. Find work in Spanish: Whether it is paid or volunteer, try to find some sort of work in a Spanish environment. Again, this forces you to use your Spanish, and there is no way to avoid it.
3. Join a conversation exchange: Most countries have a conversation exchange program within their city. Furthermore, there are now many websites that facilitate meeting up for conversation exchanges. Join one of these, and try to meet up as much as possible. Conversation exchange involves meeting a native speaker, and speaking for half the time in English and half the time in Spanish. It is a relaxed environment, and you will be learning Spanish from a local. While speaking English with them, you will be amazed that you are learning Spanish at the same time. In addition, try to find some online exchange partners whom you can chat with. Chatting is a great way to learn new vocabulary, and view your sentence structure as you are "speaking."
4. Read in Spanish: Find a publication that you really enjoy reading. Newspapers and magazines are the best possible choices because they are comprised of short articles using local vocabulary and expressions. Make sure to read regularly, you will quickly learn new vocabulary, and subconsciously become a much better speaker.
5. Listen to music in Spanish: Find some music that you like in Spanish, and listen to the lyrics as much as possible. Argentina has many favorite music groups, in all different genres, so there is something there for everyone. If you don't understand all of the words, look up the lyrics online, and then find the translations of the words you do not understand. From that point on, every time you hear the song, you will be accustomed to hearing those words, and it will help you to remember the meanings.
To properly learn a new language, you have to practice the four different facets of which a language is comprised listening, reading, speaking, and writing. If you follow the above five methods, you will improve in all facets of the Spanish language, in turn helping you to become fluent faster! In no time, you will be speaking like an Argentine. Have fun and buena suerte!
