Things To Think About When Going Into The City, Away From
Puerto Vallarta Resorts

By Denis Stuart.

Puerto Vallarta resorts are known for being a tourist favorite, but a journey into the city can also be very rewarding. Feel free to mingle with the locals, and get acquainted with the customs. However, before you go, make sure to prepare yourself for what to expect in the city.

Using Phones in the City - You may be able to use your cell phone in Mexico, but call you provider to be certain. If you find yourself needing a phone in downtown Puerto Vallarta, you will find that long distance calls can be as much as seven dollars a minute. Many have suggested that pre-paid pay phone cards are the way to go, costing less than a dollar per minute. You'll need one, as many of the pay phones don't accept change.

Garbage Bags Out Every Day - Some people notice the trash bags sitting out every single day and assume the city is filthy. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Trash is collected every day. At one time there was a man who ran down the street ringing a bell every morning to alert people to bring out their trash before the truck came. Don't worry, it recently became possible to sleep in comfortably. Collection now happens in the evening, after 9pm, without the bell ringing.

Children With Jobs - You may witness children bagging your groceries at the supermarket. This may startle some, but there are programs in Mexico that help children find employment that doesn't exploit them and keeps them in school. It is common to encounter children selling "chiclets" on the street. Supermarket jobs are to keep children away from this kind of street corner work.

Drinking Alcohol in Town - Don't believe anyone that tells you Mexican police are lenient. They are just as dedicated to the law as police officers anywhere else in the world. People caught driving under the influence or even being drunk in public can be punished with jail time. Keeping your drinking on the resort is probably a good idea.

Your Money - Wearing a fanny pack or money belt only advertises that you are a tourist, and makes you a target for ne'er-do-wells. Also, keep small bills on hand, both for your safety and for your convenience. Many vendors will not always have change to give you.

Enjoy your stay in Puerto Vallarta resorts. Then, when you want to go into town, get to know the people and the culture. When you go off the resort, have a good plan and you'll have a good time.
